Supervisor Bill Rieber announces that the Town of Thompson Town Board recently approved its 2020 budget with projected operating funds reductions of 1.1%.

This will be the SIXTH straight year Thompson taxes will drop.

Total appropriations including all districts are $22M. Our 18 Sewer and Water Districts, which account for about 23% of spending are the most difficult budgets to manage, due to aging infrastructure and increased demands from the NYSDEC and the EPA. We have, however completed a project in Emerald Green, budgeted at $3.125m, coming in almost $1.0m under budget using different technology. We secured a 25% grant to further lessen the cost. Additionally,

  • We have completed a new pavilion and trail improvements at our Town Park on Old Liberty Road and our new park in Rock Hill is coming along nicely and should be open to the public sometime in 2021.
  • The Town Board just approved replacing street lights thorough out the Town. This will offer a quality lighting experience to our residents at reduced cost, while doing our part to insure a greener environment. The system will also be able to provide Wi-Fi service to underserved locations such as the Rock Hill Business District.
  • We have also aggressively demolished blighted buildings and will continue to do so.
  • We have invested heavily in updating our vehicles and heavy construction equipment without borrowing any money.
  • We continue to fund highway improvements generously. Under Highway Superintendent Rich Benjamin, our roads are second to none.

“While this has been a most difficult year for the entire world, we will weather the storm and come back stronger than ever. Thompson is experiencing a robust real estate market and commercial construction still continues at a rapid pace. The goal is to continue to be the economic driver for Sullivan County and to welcome businesses and new residents alike to Thompson. The Town Board and our staff and other elected officials have worked hard to manage this growth by balancing taxes; improving our quality of life by reducing blight and improving parks. We will seize every opportunity available to maximize results, lower taxes and make our community a better place to live.”
